Gloag joins battle for stage win in second stage Coppi e Bartali

Tom Gloag has finished sixth in the second stage of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali. The Jumbo-Visma rider led a breakaway to the finish line on the last lap. On the Wall of Belvedere, Gloag finished behind winner Sean Quinn by a few seconds.

During the second stage, which led them from Riccione to Longiano, the Wall awaited the riders after 172 kilometres. Gloag recognised his opportunity to force a shift after the lead group was caught on the final classified climb. He succeeded: six riders joined him.

The young Briton had to let his escape companions go on the ascent of the Wall. Gloag eventually crossed the line 13 seconds behind the stage winner. "It was good to see Tom at the front", sports director Robert Wagner said. "He was sick last week and had a bad day yesterday. Today he was the strongest of us."

In the overall standings, Gloag no longer plays a significant role. Tijmen Graat is the best Jumbo-Visma rider in the fourteenth position. "Tomorrow, we will continue to fight. In general, we are very good, and there are still some nice stages to go."
