Piganzoli solos to stage and GC victory in queen stage La Route d’Occitanie

Piganzoli solos to stage and GC victory in queen stage La Route d’Occitanie

Davide Piganzoli seized power at La Route d’Occitanie on the final day. In the tough queen stage, the 23-year-old Italian from Team Visma | Lease a Bike triumphed after a 35-kilometer solo breakaway. It was Piganzoli’s first victory in the colors of Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

“It’s amazing to get my first win here for this team,” Piganzoli said afterward. “My first race for the team was the Faun-Ardèche Classic, and even then I dreamed of winning in these colors one day. Our main goal was to win this stage and the overall classification, so I’m extremely satisfied that we managed to do it. My teammates played a huge role in this victory. I’m very grateful to them.”

The first two stages both ended in sprints, but on the final day it was time for the climbers. In the 172-kilometer stage between Loures-Barousse and Loudenvielle, the riders faced five categorized climbs. An early breakaway of around eight riders was caught by the peloton well before the finish.

On the Col de Val Louron-Azet, the penultimate climb of the day, Team Visma | Lease a Bike set a high pace. Strong turns at the front by Tim Rex and Tijmen Graat gradually reduced the peloton to a select group. With 35 kilometers remaining, Piganzoli launched his attack. His advantage quickly grew to more than a minute. Piganzoli then rode comfortably to the stage victory and overall win in the French three-day race. Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s victory tally in 2026 now stands at 28 wins.

"We had a clear plan: make the race hard"

Tijmen Graat

After a strong race, Graat secured tenth place in the general classification. The 23-year-old Dutchman from Team Visma | Lease a Bike also looked back proudly: “We had a clear plan: make the race hard. Axel Zingle and Loe van Belle controlled the opening phase. In the mountains, it was up to Tim and me to keep the pace high in the peloton. In the end, Davide finished off the team effort brilliantly. It’s great that we were able to end this stage race with a victory.”
