Veenhoven sprints to fourth place in chaotic second stage of Tour of Britain
Nienke Veenhoven finished fourth in the second stage of the Tour of Britain, which was briefly neutralized. The 22-year-old Dutch rider had to trail three riders in the bunch sprint, including stage winner Lorena Wiebes.
The peloton set off from Clitheroe in pouring rain for a 110-kilometer stage finishing in Blackpool. The toughest part of the stage came early on, featuring two categorized climbs. After the hilly opening section, the race moved into a largely flat finale.
Just over 70 kilometers from the finish, the race was neutralized following an incident on the course. After the interruption, the peloton was able to resume racing. Shortly after the restart, Katrine Aalerud, who had already gone clear solo before the neutralization, was caught. Oda Aune Gissinger then launched a solo attack. The Norwegian rider was reeled in by the peloton in the closing kilometers as the bunch prepared for a mass sprint.
In that sprint, Veenhoven got boxed in. As a result, the Dutch rider for Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women was only able to launch her sprint late. In the end, only Kim Pienaar-Le Court, Maggie Coles-Lyster and Wiebes finished ahead of Veenhoven.
"I had a strong acceleration in my legs, but I wasn’t able to make the most of it"
“As a team, we were well positioned throughout the race and stayed alert during the opening phase,” Veenhoven reflected. “The neutralization was somewhat confusing, but it was absolutely the right decision. After the restart, the pace picked up immediately and there were constant attacks. We managed to move up toward the front in the finale, but I got boxed in during the final kilometer. I still had a strong acceleration in my legs, but I wasn’t able to make the most of it today.”
