Vigié sprints to an impressive fourth place in the first stage of Vuelta a Burgos
Margaux Vigié crossed the finish line in fourth place in the opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. In the bunch sprint, the 30-year-old Frenchwoman was only beaten by Lorena Wiebes, Chiara Consonni and Georgia Baker.
The eleventh edition of the Spanish stage race kicked off with a relatively flat 127-kilometre stage in and around Burgos. Shortly after the start, three riders broke away from the peloton and quickly built up a comfortable lead. Katharina Sadnik attempted to bridge the gap, but her effort proved in vain.
After the breakaway riders were caught with just under twenty kilometres to go, the sprint trains began to form. Vigié was led to the front by Sadnik and then opted to follow Wiebes’ wheel. The Dutch champion proved too strong in the sprint, but Vigié managed to hold her own among the sprinters.
"If you can finish fourth amongst the world’s best sprinters, you’re simply doing very well."
"This is a very promising start. We had hoped that Margaux would be able to compete for the top spots, and she certainly succeeded in that", sports director Jan Boven said. "After the Itzulia last year and the Vuelta a Burgos two years ago, these are the moments she can seize. If you can finish fourth amongst the world’s best sprinters, you’re simply doing very well."
According to Boven, Vigié will have another chance to prove herself tomorrow. "Tomorrow will be broadly similar to today. That means Katharina and Margaux can have another go. In the days that follow, it will get a bit tougher and it will be up to our climbers Maud and Rosita to aim for a good overall classification. They came through today unscathed, so all in all it was a good day."
