The stage was characterised by an early breakaway. The group got a maximum lead of five minutes and were reeled in in the final by the sprinter teams. Team Jumbo-Visma, down to six riders after losing Leemreize, were attentively riding near the front of the peloton all day and did not get into any trouble in today’s second stage.

“The main goal today was to keep both George and Sepp in front in order not to lose time for the general classification”, sports director Arthur van Dongen said. “There were many possibilities in today’s stage that, with slightly more wind, would have been in favour of echelons. It didn’t get to echelons because there was little wind, but we constantly had to be careful and pay attention. The guys did an excellent job. I also compliment Finn who, after yesterday’s crash, did some great work in the final by supporting our GC riders. In the end, Pascal sprinted to a meritorious ninth place.”

Tomorrow is the first serious test for the GC riders. Then the stage ends after 150 kilometres on the Picón Blanco. “Tomorrow it is up to our GC guys George and Sepp”, Van Dongen continued. “It is a long and difficult final climb where you can definitely make the difference. It is going to be a fair battle and the legs are going to decide. Hopefully we'll still be in a good place overall tomorrow night.”
