Vos fights back to seventh place after crash in opening stage of La Vuelta Femenina, Ferrand-Prévot ninth
Marianne Vos finished seventh in the opening stage of La Vuelta Femenina. Vos positioned herself at the front throughout the race, but a crash in the final ten kilometers prevented her from contesting the victory. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot finished ninth after a strong ride.
In the first stage of the Spanish stage race through the Galician hills, the Dutch team rode at the front all day in support of team leader Vos. Although several splits occurred in the peloton during the stage, a large group headed into the finale.
In a chaotic finale, Vos crashed on the slippery roads after being unable to avoid a rider in front of her, while Imogen Wolff also went down in the same descent. With the help of her teammates, Vos managed to rejoin in the final kilometer. On the uphill finish, she impressively sprinted to seventh place, while Ferrand-Prévot came in ninth.
"Marianne went to the hospital for a check-up"
“We were well positioned at the front in the finale, but in the tricky descent I crashed on the slippery surface because I couldn’t avoid a rider in front of me,” Vos said afterwards. “During the chase, the team did a fantastic job to bring me back to the front group. I was still able to move up, but I didn’t have the legs to fight for the win.”
Vos was taken to hospital for precautionary checks after the stage, sports director Van Emden said. “Marianne went to the hospital for a check-up. The crash is a blemish on what was otherwise a strong race from our team. The riders followed the plan and were in position at the right moments.”
