Vos sprints to first victory of the season in final stage Volta a Catalunya

Marianne Vos claimed victory in the final stage of the Volta a Catalunya. Racing through the streets of Barcelona, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider proved dominant in the bunch sprint. Nienke Veenhoven, winner of the opening stage on Friday, finished second and secured the points classification.

"I’m very grateful to the team for this victory", Vos said afterwards. "When the breakaway gained a three-minute advantage, we decided to increase the pace in the peloton. Maud and Marion did a fantastic job of keeping the gap under control. Everyone was fully committed to going for the win. Margaux and Nienke then delivered me to the finish in the perfect position, and I was able to finish it off. The fact that we once again finished first and second makes it even more special."

The third and final stage of the Catalan stage race took the peloton from Mataró to Barcelona. Four riders formed the day’s breakaway and built a maximum lead of three minutes. Maud Oudeman and Marion Bunel moved to the front of the peloton and steadily reduced the gap.

With four kilometres remaining, the breakaway’s adventure came to an end, and Margaux Vigié guided teammates Vos and Veenhoven into position. In the finishing straight, the pair accelerated clear of the rest of the field, with Vos ultimately taking the victory. Competing in her first race since crashing in the Vuelta a España, Vos secured her first win of the season and the 259th victory of her career.

"We’re extremely pleased with how this weekend turned out", sports director Joppe de Heij said. "To finish first and second twice with the same riders, just in a different order, might be even more special than having one rider win twice. It’s great for Nienke to take the points classification after already winning the opening stage on Friday. Maud and Marion worked incredibly hard today and made sure we could sprint for the win. That was great to see. In the end, everyone played their part in this victory.”
