Sadnik attacks and finishes fifth at the Festival Elsy Jacobs

Katharina Sadnik finished fifth in a tough edition of the Festival Elsy Jacobs. The 22-year-old Austrian was part of a breakaway group that held on all the way to the finish. In the sprint, Sadnik ultimately had to settle for four riders ahead of her.

The Festival Elsy Jacobs concluded with a 120-kilometer race starting and finishing in Cessange. In the opening phase, the race was shaken by a crash in the peloton. Sadnik was among the riders involved but quickly managed to rejoin the bunch.

With around 55 kilometers to go, Sadnik made a strong move in the peloton. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women rider was joined by seven fellow escapees. Gradually, the group of eight extended its lead, increasingly putting itself in contention for the win.

Sadnik responded alertly to every attack in the breakaway and launched an all-or-nothing move in the final kilometer. The Austrian opened a small gap but was caught again in the closing meters. In the end, she capped off her strong ride with a fifth-place finish. Victory went to Erin Boothman. After the race, Sadnik was taken to the hospital for further examination following her crash.

“Halfway through the race, we started attacking as a team, and eventually I made it into the right breakaway,” Sadnik reflected. “We only started with four riders, but we worked well together. In the break, we found each other and built a strong advantage. I decided to give it everything in the final kilometer, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the win. I’m satisfied with this performance, although there are definitely things I can learn from. As a team, we can look back on an excellent weekend in Luxembourg.”
