De Vries and Van Dam remain in contention for a podium finish at the Tour de Suisse Women after solid time trial performances
Femke de Vries and Sarah Van Dam held their own in the Tour de Suisse Women time trial on Saturday. De Vries claimed an impressive eighth place on the 23.7-kilometre course, moving up to fifth in the general classification. Van Dam limited her losses and remains fourth overall with one stage remaining.
The fourth stage of the Swiss stage race featured a 23.7-kilometre individual time trial in and around Aarburg. Starting the day in eighth place overall, De Vries completed the predominantly flat course in 30 minutes and 47 seconds. Her effort was good enough for a strong eighth-place finish. Marlen Reusser proved to be the fastest rider and took over the lead from Elisa Longo Borghini. Van Dam finished 28th.
"We can look back on a good day", sports director Jan Boven said. “Femke rode a strong time trial and did exactly what she needed to do. Sarah started well but faded slightly in the second half. The result may be a little disappointing, but when you look at the general classification, she is still in a very good position. Both Femke and Sarah remain on course for a podium finish."
"The battle for the final podium spot is still completely open."
The decisive queen stage of the Tour de Suisse Women awaits on Sunday. The riders face a demanding final stage featuring two ascents of the Col de la Croix and a mountain-top finish. "Tomorrow will be very straightforward", Boven said. "There are two tough climbs and, with the heat we are experiencing, it is going to be a gruelling day."
According to Boven, everything is still to play for on the final day. "It looks as though the riders in first and second place are out of reach, but the battle for the final podium spot is still completely open. We will do everything we can to finish third and to defend Sarah’s white jersey."
