De Vries finishes Tour de Suisse Women in fifth place and secures mountain classification
Femke de Vries has capped off a strong week with a fifth-place finish in the general classification of the Tour de Suisse Women. The 32-year-old rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike was once again among the best in the queen stage, crossing the finish line in fifth place in Villars-Sur-Ollon. De Vries also secured victory in the Queen of the Mountain classification.
With nearly 2,800 metres of climbing and multiple ascents of the Col de la Croix, the organisers of the Swiss stage race had saved the toughest challenge for the final day. De Vries once again demonstrated her class on the climbs and played a key role in thinning out the group of favourites. At the summit of the climbs, De Vries collected several mountain points, securing victory in the QOM classification.
On the final climb, De Vries wasn't able to follow Marlen Reusser, Cédrine Kerbaol, Kasia Niewiadoma and Kimberley Le Court. The Dutch rider rode at her own pace up the climb and fought her way to fifth place. That was also her position in the general classification. Sarah Van Dam finished eighth and took seventh place in the general classification.
"I’m absolutely satisfied with how this week has gone. I secured my first professional victory on Wednesday and today, for the first time in my career, I won a jersey. I’d certainly have signed up for that beforehand", beams De Vries. "I hadn’t necessarily set it as a goal, but I thought: if I’m in the mix anyway, I might as well sprint for the mountain points. This is a great reward."
According to De Vries, fifth place in the general classification was the hightest possible. "On the first climb I felt absolutely brilliant and had the feeling I was one of the better riders. On the final climb, the pace was just a bit too fast. I decided to set my own pace in the hope that I might still be able to get back into the mix. I gave it my all, but it just wasn’t quite enough to fight for the win", said De Vries.
"It was a really great battle, just as we'd hoped."
"It was a really great battle, just as we’d hoped, actually", sports director Jan Boven added. "We had set our sights on a podium place in the general classification. For a brief moment, it looked like things were going our way, but on the final climb, Femke unfortunately had to drop. She really gave it her all and fifth place was ultimately the best we could achieve."
With a stage win, victory in the mountains classification and two top-ten finishes in the general classification, Boven describes it as a successful week. "We rode a brilliant race with this small group of four. We can certainly be proud of that."
